CHAPTER SIX

"You have to withdraw, Adam," Elena said, her voice quivering with emotion. "It's just not right. You'd be a terrible king."

Adam stared at her, appalled. Why was it that the women in his life always turned on him? "What are you talking about? I thought you were on my side."

She heard the tight thread of emotion in his voice and knew she'd cut him to the quick. But she had to be honest. She couldn't back down now.

"I am on your side. I'm on the side of you doing what's right and not cheating people."

He couldn't believe she was saying these things. He reached out to take her shoulders in his hands, but he stopped himself just in time and pulled back, spinning on his heel instead and slamming a fist into a pillow on the back of the couch.

"Elena, I'm not cheating anyone. They're desperate for a king. I can be King. I've got the genes for it. I didn't ask for this choice. They're the ones who asked me to come."

Fabio had raised his head as the argument began. Now he rose and moved quietly to stand in front of Elena. Adam looked at that and wanted to laugh. Even the dog had turned on him.

"Let them choose someone else," Elena said, standing tough, though her lower lip was trembling. "Please, Adam. For your own good."

"That's just it, Elena. I don't think there is anyone else. I'm it. It's the end of the line for them. That's why I hope to get a lot out of this deal."

Money again. Always the money. She shook her head, because she knew he wasn't the only one. She'd let him stay here for the money. How could she criticize him? Still, she had to try to make him see that taking this position would only end up ruining him.

"If you are the end of the line, a new line should be started. There are many noble families. You read about them all the time. Let them choose one and start a new dynasty. Perhaps bring in a royal from another country. Other countries have done that in the past." She threw up her hands and a tremor of emotion entered her voice. "But it must be someone who appreciates Niroli and loves us. Someone who lives and breathes the Nirolian spirit."

"The Nirolian spirit," he repeated, pained, shaking his head, and his tone was sarcastic. "What exactly is the Nirolian spirit?"

"You don't know and that's why you can't be King. You have to live and breathe it. You can't phone it in from Hollywood."

His head went back as though she'd slapped him. Something in her words and the way she said them stung like nothing had in a long time. He knew he couldn't refute her logic. The thing was, he didn't care about the things she thought were so important. He didn't want to care.

But he didn't like being seen as a cad, either. Especially by this woman he was learning to admire so much.
